Complementary and Alternative Health

More and more people are looking to complementary health BBC Report and perhaps we should take more responsibility for our health. After all we have probably forgotten and lost much of what our ancestors knew that worked. Alternative health looks at a person holistically and not just at the symptoms.

Should we only rely on modern medicine to make us well?

Can we only trust medicine that has had double blind studies? Well there has never been a double blind study to show that water puts out fire, but the whole of our fire brigade depends on the fact that it works!!

Now don't get me wrong - I am not knocking the National Health Service - for emergency medicine there is nothing better if I ever have a heart attack, please don't take me to a nutritionist. But for long term chronic complaints like arthritis, diabetes type II, chronic fatigue, menopause, obesity,  RSI, M.E. etc it doesent always help that much and can sometimes make things worse.

The nature of medicine is interventionist, you have a heart attack, your heart stops beating, you die unless there is intervention. With Diabetes type I your body does not manufacture insulin, which controls blood sugar, you need intervention. If you have asthma, your airways constrict and you can't breathe you may need intervention. Not so with problems such as obesity and diabetes II these conditions are mostly caused by diet and are wholly fixable with diet unfortunately most people don't know how or don't want to make the changes necessary to their diet or lifestyle.

As a nation we need to stop thinking that to reduce the amount of highly processed de-valued food is some sort of punishment.  too many of our children are getting their breakfast at the sweet shop on the way to school. Daily Mail article "Britain is sickest country in Europe" 

Is it really that simple?

Not entirely, our bio-chemistry is as individual as our fingerprint so it is more complex than the much used formula:

calories in vs calories out = weight gain or loss

Our bodies need so much more than calories they are a complex masterpiece of chemical engineering with specific needs of nutrients to perform functions of everyday living. If we don't get these nutrients we won't die immediately but we won't feel full of vitality and we enter a gradual decline which shortens our life span and sets us up to be susceptible to disease.

Let me put it another way, when we buy a car it comes with a manual, if we read the instructions we know it needs petrol (fuel) and oil some water in the radiator, air in the tyres etc etc. unfortunately when we are born we don't come with a manual and so we rely on various information passed down by our parents or learnt at school or what we see and hear.

Not all of what we see and hear is good information!

Suppliers of junk food do not want you to be healthy they want to make money!!

 Go back to the car, we know (sometimes by learning the hard way) that if we put diesel in a petrol car or vice versa it won't work and it might damage the car. Likewise if we put the wrong fuel in our body it doesn't work so well and might damage our body.

Most people know that if they lived entirely on hamburgers and nothing else they would probably get fat, not be very healthy and might be likely to catch more colds etc. and yet a lot of people do this on a regular basis, ok so not all the time but more and more because of our busy lifestyle   we use "convenience food" because we don't have much time or are tired and its too much effort to cook. Even though we know certain foods arn't particularly good for us we think its ok if we have them now and again.

After all we need to have some pleasures in life right? problem is more and more we gradually increase our consumption of these foods because we got away with it didn't we? 


We know a great deal more about the causes of physical disease than we do about the causes of physical health.

To an extent we do, our bodies have an amazing ability to keep us going even though we treat them badly, however it comes at a price, and the price is storing up problems for the future. So yes, we can get away with it in our 20's and don't feel the downside too much, it gets a little harder in our 30's and we notice we can't quite drink so much alcohol and still feel reasonably ok enough to get through the next day. By the time we get into our 40's we notice we are slowing down a bit, feel a few aches and pains, are filling out a bit around the middle. The 50's comes the start of the real problems, ill health, menopause, diabetes, angina, indigestion, poor sleep patterns etc.

Back to the car, we haven't really been looking after it, don't service it quite as much as we used to, have forgotten to top up the radiator with water and its overheated a few times, so it starts to get old has broken down a few times and we are thinking its about time to trade it in for a newer model.

We can't do that with our bodies!!

The good news is we don't have to, unlike the car our bodies can be forgiving and if we haven't abused them to the point of no return we can actually fix a lot of the problems we have caused and in some cases even reverse some of the damage we have done by taking a few simple steps.
